Don’t forget – today at 10.30am BCC are partnering up with S.M.I.L.E to help deliver an inclusive playground for Melba residents. Join us at 1 Conley Drive Melba from 10.30am for some community fun and tell us what you need in your area.

Late last year your BCC Committee were approached by Melba resident Tim Korsopp seeking assistance to form a proposal for an inclusive playground for the suburb.

Over the last few months, Tim and fellow Melba resident Hector Contreras have developed a high level document outlining the proposal and presented it at our February Committee meeting. They have also created a Facebook page S.M.I.L.E so residents can get information and exchange ideas on the proposal.

Your BCC Committee endorsed the proposal and will be partnering with Tim, Hector and other residents to put the proposal to our local Ginninderra MLAs for support. Eventually, we would like to see the proposal picked up by the ACT Government as part of the next budget allocation for feasability studies and implementation funding.

BCC Ginninderra Candidates Forum 2020

Join us this Thursday night 8 October from 7.00pm to hear from Ginninderra candidates in this year’s ACT Election.

  1. Please describe one single outcome that you or your party will deliver to improve the district and community, within the first 12 months of your election, and

Belconnen Community Council – Annual General Meeting 2020

Notice is given that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Belconnen Community Council will be held from 7.00 pm Tuesday 15 September 2020.   Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the AGM will be held via ZOOM rather than meeting in person.  The link to join the AGM via ZOOM is:

The Ongoing challenges being faced by Victoria has had an indelible effect on life here in the ACT. Belconnen is not immune: the gateway to our territory from Victoria is via the Barton Highway and we have seen the number of police vehicles monitoring entry increase over recent days as the window to travel home closes. Can I ask you all to stay vigilant, continue the fantastic community effort of the last five or so months and please ensure you are tested at the first sign of symptoms.

Waste Services for the Belconnen District

There’s been a fair amount of talk about the current and future state of waste management services for our district in the lead up to the election. We are not alone in our concern for the management of waste and the ACT Government has implemented a feasibility proposal for all of the territory; the efforts of the Combined Community Councils of the ACT have turned their attention to influencing this process for the best possible outcomes. While political parties of all colours are ramping up the rhetoric, the BCC (as a participating member of the CCC) are actively looking at ways to identify gaps, source solutions and put together a package that can be considered by government to address the community concern. If you have ideas and feedback on this important issue, please get in touch with us so they can be included.

Three years down

This month marks the final time I will lead the BCC as its Chair. Since joining on as a member in 2014 (after being asked to participate in the forum to fight the move of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection away from Belconnen) I have been privileged to watch our district and its people expand and grow. We are now:

  • home to over 100,000 people
  • in the top two apartment dwellers in the territory (in 2017 we were the biggest!)
  • have the best rehabilitation hospital and facilities in the region

When I took over the role in 2018, one of my goals was to help solve the impasse with the proposed expansion of the Kippax Centre. While we are not yet at a point to say we have solved all the problems, we are able to say we have a way forward and at some stage next year (depending on the outcome of the land use tender) plans may be available for the community to peruse. Along with all the other stakeholders, we believe the most recent offering by the current owners will address the bulk of the community concerns raised with us over the last five years and set our West Belconnen area up for facilities that will last them for another 50 years. My thanks to all those who have worked so positively with us on this crucial issue.

I would like to pay tribute to our team of exceptional committee members over the last three years. We have faced many challenges and some which I don’t think any of us had envisaged when we started; but we have weathered them all and kept our dignity intact (except for perhaps that moment at the Florey Fair last year when I took a tumble!). Each of you have contributed to our community in a way few others have and your support for me has been more valued than you can ever know. You are the reason our council exists and may you always be remembered for your time and efforts to keep Belconnen the Jewel in Canberra’s Crown.

And a plea to all of our members to think about stepping up and becoming a committee member. We are in need of new faces to help take us into 2021 so if you have just a couple of hours to spare we would be grateful for your help!

Belconnen Community Council – Chair’s Report June 2020

It’s been pleasing to see the continued downward trend in COVID cases in the ACT. While we still have a single active case, we must remain vigilant as the restrictions are wound back. As I walk through Belconnen Mall, I am frequently struck by the lack of adherence to social distancing requirements and the almost invisibility of the 1.5m gap. Can I encourage everyone to be more conscious of the rules that have served us so well over the last 10 weeks as we start to move toward the new normal.

One of the other positives for the BCC is our reconnection with the Combined Community Councils. This crisis has provided a lot of lessons and opportunities to learn from how other Councils are navigating the challenges, and we are all finding commonality in our experiences. As the year progresses, we hope to be able to share those positives and learn from the negatives to strengthen your voice with government.

Belconnen Bikeway

One of the promises being delivered to the community from the last budget is the construction of the Belconnen Bikeway. While the old Busway section is all but finished, construction is in full swing throughout the town centre and UC. As a regular cyclist I am really pleased with what I’m seeing along Emu Bank and should the same be replicated in the eastern corridor this will be a fantastic community asset for many years to come. We will post photos as the work continues and keep you updated on the progress of each stage.

North Lawson

Community consultation on the development of North Lawson are about to commence. This area of the suburb holds some of the most interesting and diverse changes in soils and plant life; many people have not had an opportunity to walk this part of the estate and it is worth the effort!

A full list of online consultation is available on our website and we encourage everyone to get involved to ensure we get the best possible outcome for North Lawson.

Response from Sports Australia

On the back of the letter we wrote to Sports Australia, Senator Richard Colbeck and Yvette Berry plus our interview on 666 Afternoons regarding the future of the AIS precinct, Sports Australia has written to us with some positivity. In essence, the response tells us they have no intention of going anywhere and are formulating a business case for the federal government to consider in the lead up to next year’s Tokyo Olympics. While the AIS remains closed to the public, they are looking forward to welcoming people back as soon as they are able to. You can read more on our website.

New development for Braybrooke Street Bruce

On the Bruce theme, there is a new development being proposed for Block 11 Section 85 in Braybrooke Street. There will be a virtual information session held on Thursday the 17th of June from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. To register for the information session, please send your name, surname and email address to [email protected] and a link will be sent to you on the day.

Community Purpose Contribution Scheme

The Raiders Belconnen is a community based club that is required by law to support the local community and surrounding region. The club’s main objective as described in its Memorandum and Articles of Association is to assist generally in the promotion, conduct and development and propagation of Rugby League Football in the Australian Capital Territory and elsewhere.

Further to this the club is required to engage with the community and consider community needs in making Community Purpose Contributions (CPC). The following categories are prescribed as being allowable purposes:
 Charitable
 Recreational
 Education
 Social Inclusion, Equality or Cultural Diversity
 Community Sport
 Addressing Substance Misuse or Dependence
 Women’s Sport
 Natural Disaster Relief or Assistance.

If you feel that your organisation falls within one of these groups then you may make a request to the club for a CPC in writing addressed to:
Community Contributions Scheme
PO Box 152
KIPPAX ACT 2615.

You may also consider applying for a grant from The Chief Minister’s Charitable Fund, which is financed by all clubs in the ACT. Information is available here:
