Don’t forget it’s still magpie swooping season. Magpies can swoop from July through to December, but the season usually runs for about eight weeks during spring while they build nests, lay & protect eggs, & raise nestling and fledgling birds. More info at: http://bit.ly/CBRMagpieSeason

Welcome to the Belconnen Community Council

The Belconnen Community Council is a volunteer-led community organisation. Our role is to foster Belconnen's community identity and to be a strong voice for the community.

BCC public meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of each month from February to November, starting at 7pm in the Community Room, upstairs at the Belconnen Library on Chandler Street. Meetings are public, and anyone who lives, works, studies or owns property in Belconnen is invited to participate.

The ACT Government clean-up of Belconnen suburbs after the storm in January is now complete. We would like to thank the community for their assistance and patience throughout the storm clean-up. The final stages of the storm clean-up prioritised green open spaces and stump grinding. Since the storm began, ACT Government crews and contractors have:🌳 created about 10,000 cubic metres of high-quality mulch for distribution to schools for use in garden beds and green spaces 🌳 processed another estimated 10,000 cubic metres of wood chips for distribution to shared green spaces and garden beds across Canberra🌳 completed an average of 200 identified jobs per week since the storm began, which is over double their normal weekly averages without intense storm events 🌳 addressed over 100 damaged trees in each of the hardest hit suburbs including Charnwood, Hawker, Higgins, Holt, Macgregor and Melba. Canberrans who notice storm damage that may have been missed, or where more damage has occurred, can let us know via www.act.gov.au/fixmystreet or call Access Canberra on 13 22 81. ... I’ve had a few people reach out to me asking about the plans for the Old Belconnen Health Centre site next to Margaret Timpson Park in the Belco town centre. We haven’t had an update for a while and the old building has been demolished for over two years, and out of use for even longer than that, so I’ve checked in with the Planning Minister. The site has been identified as a location for a demonstration housing project. These projects are unique developments which can demonstrate how we can best deliver a compact, sustainable, accessible and active city through innovative design. The Minister advises the site is still listed for a demonstration housing project and it has progressed past the stage 1 expression of interest process and is now being evaluated by EPSDD under the second stage. Once that’s complete, more information will be provided to the public and plans for the site should be published on the demonstration housing project website.www.planning.act.gov.au/urban-renewal/demonstration-housing-projectI’ll keep monitoring the progress of this one closely and will keep the community updated as I learn more and the project develops. In the meantime feel free to reach out to my office at 02 6205 0131 or Clay@parliament.act.gov.au if you had any questions or feedback, or any issues you wanted to chat to me about as your local member for Ginninderra. ... Here's the video of our community meeting last night. This includes presentations on the draft changes to the management of the ACT's Urban Forest and an update on the William Hovell Drive Upgrade. Of note is that there has been a referral to the Federal Government for approval for clearing an area between John Gorton Drive and Bindubi Streets which contains endangered species. Other topics discussed:- The Development Application for the new Stockdill Drive Green Waste Facility will be coming out soon for community consultation- Lawson Stage 2 development - Changes to ACT Planning Laws (under consultation now)- Kippax Shopping Centre - new lighting proposed- Ginninderra Field Station Big thanks to the presenters and everyone who attended! ... There are a few issues here, none more striking than the current construct of the NCA. Speaking as the Chair of a Community Council, Canberra City (Civic) deserves to be listed, no question. But the other town centres are a long way off any heritage consideration, and rightly so. The broader problem lies with the NCA and how it administers commonwealth land within the territory. As a private citizen I’ve been on the record since the late 1990s about the failures here in Belconnen around the old Bus Interchange precinct, the reimagined Westfield bus station and the effects on the land around it. ABS House is another debacle and we are about to see the Benjamin Offices be remade once again. Add to that the fiasco that is the old Ginninderra Field Station site and you start to get a picture of where that rotting apple is in the barrel. Sure you can bake the ACT Government into that strudel, but let me tell you it’s just a distraction from the real game being played and no one actually wants to deal with the NCA in any meaningful way. These are my final few months in the role before I step down and just like Kippax, it’s another issue that I can’t ever hope to solve given the lack of commitment to compromise. ...
